The author gives us a front row seat as she travels around the world alone and on a shoestring. We catch a glimpse of exotic places and cultures that most of us aren't aware of. The tale of her time in Nepal and her portraiture of the coterie of fellow trekkers that appear as she negotiates the Annapurna Circuit was great reading. As if her solo trek wasn't interesting enough, she also gives us a brutally honest view of her inner journey towards real self awareness and watch her move away from toxic relationships with tragically broken men and towards something much better. I found myself laughing with her, yelling at her, sharing her frustrations and, most of all, rooting for her.
An extremely satisfying book, I look forward to whatever is next from Cara Lopez Lee.

They Only Eat Their Husbands Cara Lopez Lee 9780982504376 Books Reviews
THEY ONLY EAT THEIR HUSBANDS is a memoir that carries the reader on two journeys. The first is a physical adventure a travel log, if you will, around the planet. The other adventure is just as captivating. We follow the author in her quest to understand herself.
Cara Lopez Lee learns the hard way, as we all did, about what it means to be in love. About what it means to be treated well by a partner. About what it means to love herself.
Alaska, Europe, the Himalayas. Cara has a number of amazing tales in this memoir. Many of which still live with me today.
I use this book with high school students because it captures the wanderlust that lives within them along with the inspirational beauty of the human spirit.
There is some great writing in They Only Eat Their Husbands, Cara Lopez Lee's travel and relationship memoir. I dog ear pages of books when a passage strikes me as particularly memorable or well constructed (never library books or borrowed books, please don't judge), but stopped in the first chapter because I realized I would have to dog ear the entire book. An insightful read - Lee isn't afraid to lay it all out there, from her sex life to a troubled childhood to farts. Single women will find her romantic entanglements especially interesting.
"Bald and puffed up from chemotherapy, with one lonely testicle as lost in its sack as a new divorce in a king size bed, he was even more difficult to resist than when he'd first turned on his blond, fit, oversexed charm."
Loved this book and highly recommend it! Who might also like this book? Anyone who has a love of travel or a yearning to travel, anyone who has been in love and had a broken heart, anyone who wants deeper insight into life. Not only is this a captivating story, but it is also written with such intelligence that for the first time since college I was marking special quotes and passages I wanted to come back to or share with others.
I first met Cara at a local writer's gathering--a friendly smile in a room full of strangers. I went home and looked up her website and was intrigued. We exchanged email and her signature included an amazing quote from her book, which I loved enough to post on Facebook. From there we met again and exchanged our books....and then hers sat on my shelf for months. I was squeamish about reading about her personal life, frankly. Finally I decided I had to read it and picked it up with reservations. After the first few pages I could not put it down and before it was finished I was already recommending it.
Not only did I read about how courageous Cara was in travel and life, but I was impressed with the guts it took to write it all down for people to read about. I hope she writes another book because my response to this one is, "Tell me more!"
They Only Eat Their Husbands by Cara Lopez
If you've ever dreamt of travelling around the world solo but haven't yet experienced it for yourself, Cara's tales will lift you out of your armchair and drop you in the middle of wintry Alaska, the rugged Himalayas, and exotic Thailand, and romantic Italy. All the while this 30-something doesn't hold back in revealing her own inner terrain complete with secrets and self doubt. Love is interwoven at every turning point and just when you feel like there may be a happy ending for the heroine, addictions surface and break the illusion. Undaunted, Cara confronts her realities with daring temerity she releases all ties and sets herself adrift in the world in a last ditch attempt to organize chaotic emotions and find her real self. Seeking peace with past and present, Cara reveals all to the reader as she pushes herself beyond limit. Each arduous step seems like her last yet, the path continues unfolding and Cara digs deeper and keeps pace. The writing is riveting and you'll be hooked to the very last page. Cara's global adventure and inner journey delivers through good old-fashioned storytelling. This book is an excellent gift for both dreamer and adventurer. Highly enjoyable read.
This memoir is a compassionate portrait of Cara, those close to her and those she met during a portion of her life where she is searching for answers. It is insightful, humorous, poignant, entertaining and all set with a backdrop of beautiful and exotic places. I greatly enjoyed this book.
Cara Lopez Lee's memoir of her physical and personal journey around the world is bold and gutsy. She yanks the rose-colored glasses off travel. Yet she also makes you eager to plan your own adventure. For example, while she reveals the gray landscape, sparse amenities and punishing trail of her Nepal trek, she also shares her priceless encounters with people and nature. With amazing candor, she fearlessly bares her physical and emotional self to her readers as if confiding in her most intimate friends. I admire her audacity. If you're a woman in your 30s or 40s, you'll especially love this book!
